At The McCourt Foundation, our mission is to build a healthier world, and we achieve that through the incredible work of our 125+ charity partners. This week, we are proud to spotlight an organization that has been a cornerstone of the Los Angeles philanthropic community for over five decades: The Concern Foundation.
The Concern Foundation’s history with the Los Angeles Marathon runs deep. They joined the charity program the very first year The McCourt Foundation took over the race. Since 1968, Concern has been on a relentless mission to “conquer cancer now,” raising over $80 million to fund essential research.
A Legacy of Research and Heart
While many recognize the Concern Foundation for their world class work in funding cancer research, specifically in immunology, genetics, and cell biology, their involvement in the LA Marathon has allowed them to expand their reach in a deeply personal way.
Through the Charity Partner Program, Concern focuses heavily on the LA 5K, using the event as a vital platform for community and healing.
“For us, the marathon and the 5K are about creating a sense of community for those who have been affected by cancer… it’s about being together and showing support for one another.”
— Concern Foundation Team
Expanding the Impact: Support Beyond the Lab
While laboratory research remains their primary focus, the funds raised through our charity program help Concern support the “human side” of the battle. This includes psychosocial programs that provide critical resources for:
- Cancer Patients: Navigating the emotional and mental toll of a diagnosis.
- Families & Caregivers: Offering support systems for those standing on the sidelines of the fight.
- Local Fellowships: Funding young, innovative scientists at institutions like Cedars-Sinai, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, USC and City of Hope to ensure the next generation of researchers has the tools they need to succeed.
Join Team Concern
What makes the Concern Foundation so unique is their “100% success rate” in spirit. When you see Team Concern on the course, you aren’t just seeing runners; you’re seeing board members, survivors, and families who have turned their personal experiences into a collective force for good.
Whether they are hosting their iconic block party on the Paramount Studios backlot or crossing the finish line at the 5K, the Concern Foundation reminds us that while the finish line is the goal, the journey is fueled by hope.
The McCourt Foundation is dedicated to partnering with organizations that share our commitment to health and community. By providing the platform and the pavement, we enable partners like the Concern Foundation to accelerate their life-saving work. Together, we are moving closer to building a healthier world.
