Sustainability
It takes thoughtful planning and hard work to create a sustainable event for over 25,000 athletes, and the ASICS Los Angeles Marathon is proud to lead the way. From reducing waste to supporting our local community, we are committed to making every step count.
This year, our efforts were recognized with the Evergreen Certification, the highest honor from the Council for Responsible Sport.
Evergreen Certification: Setting the Standard for Sustainable Sport
The ASICS Los Angeles Marathon has been officially awarded Evergreen Certification by the Council for Responsible Sport. This recognition reflects our deep commitment to environmental stewardship, community impact, and responsible event management.
This milestone places us among a select group of global events, including the MLB All-Star Game, Chicago Marathon, and New Orleans Jazz Festival, to earn the Council’s most rigorous certification level.
Since becoming the world’s first certified marathon in 2009, we have continued to raise the bar. We earned Silver in 2015, Gold in 2017, 2019, and 2022, and now Evergreen in 2025.
Our Focus Areas
We are reducing our environmental footprint with a robust waste diversion system across the course.
- 60 percent of waste at the Start and Finish Lines was successfully diverted from landfills
- 11,745 pounds of compostable material gathered along the course
- 1,280 pounds of discarded heatsheets collected and recycled
Look for clearly marked bins for compost, recycling, and landfill waste, along with Green Team volunteers to help guide you.
Supporting our community is central to our mission.
- 12,000 pounds of clothing and shoes collected and donated from the Start Line
- 686 pounds of leftover food donated from the Finish Line to the LA Regional Food Bank
Our partnership with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power eliminated 19,000 plastic water jugs by replacing them with sustainable water tower systems.
For the first time, three KIA EV9 electric SUVs served as lead pace vehicles, reducing emissions on race day.
Our sustainability efforts extend beyond the environment.
- 100 nonprofit partners participated in our charity program, raising millions for important causes
- 3,441 Students Run LA participants ran the marathon free of charge, many completing their first 26.2 miles
- Local nonprofits hosted educational booths at the Expo, spotlighting environmental and social issues
How You Can Support
Help us reach our goals by volunteering. Green Team members assist runners and spectators in sorting waste properly at the Finish Line. For more information on volunteer opportunities, click here.
Pay attention to waste diversion signage at the Start and Finish Lines. At waste stations, sort items carefully:
- Compost: food, liquids, wet paper
- Recycling: plastics, aluminum cans, glass, dry cardboard
- Heatsheet recycling: used heatsheets only
- Landfill: plastic utensils, chip bags, plastic wrappers, Styrofoam
Every year, local environmental organizations are featured at the Los Angeles Marathon’s Lifestyle Expo. Check out the Green Booth at this year’s Expo to learn how you can support local climate action.
Skip traffic and reduce emissions by using Metro trains and buses. Check out Metro’s website for current train and bus schedules.
Be sure to take advantage of towel and sheet reuse initiatives that may be offered by your hotel. Don’t forget to turn off all lights and electronics when you leave your room each day.
